Puppy Chow To Feed a Crowd

A Great Peanut Butter and Chocolate Classic

I can remember in grade school having a classmate bring in puppy chow as a snack for a special occasion and I had never heard of this amazing dessert and was just a little creeped out by the name— but that went away after my first bite! Fast forward to about 10 years ago and it became a staple for our family Christmas celebrations! I had personally never made it, but set inclined to try since I missed out on our puppy chow amazingness at Christmas this year somehow!

So I did some research and decided I’m going to make a big batch and take some to someone who’s had a bad week this week along with saving some for some treats for us!

      Tips and Tricks

I have always been a fan of putting extra vanilla in my recipes. Adding extra vanilla to this recipe adds a little smoother flavor than others I’ve had in the past. This is something you could reduce if you want. I also used semi sweet chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate chips to prevent the puppy chow from being overly sweet— the powdered sugar makes it sweet enough for me!

How To Make The Puppy Chow

I started with a box of chex mix dumped into a large bowl. Then use a microwave safe glass measuring container and combined the semi sweet chocolate chips, peanut butter, butter, and vanilla. I put this in the microwave to melt on the melt chocolate function for 8oz and it was the perfect amount of time. You can also use melt the chocolate mixture on medium power for one minute intervals stirring in between.

      Adding in the powdered sugar.

After the chocolate mix is melted I poured it over chex cereal. Then mixed it well until all the cereal was well covered. After the cereal was well covered pour in 1/3 of the powdered sugar and mixed it well before adding in the remaining 2 cups of the powdered sugar. This will coat the chex mixture completely.

After the mix is well coated in powdered sugar, transfer it out of the mixing bowl to an airtight storage container. Puppy chow will keep for at least a week— if it lasts that long around your house!

      Puppy Chow Ingredients

12 oz box of chex mix

2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips

      1/2 cup butter

      1 1/4 cup peanut butter

      2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

      3 cups powdered sugar
